THE LONE PINE SERIES

Alf's Bullpen and Betty's Dairy take their names from characters in the story of 'Wings Over Witchend.'

These lovely properties have strong links to the well-known author Malcolm Saville, probably best known for his Lone Pine series of children’s adventure books, many of which were set in and around the Longmynd and Stiperstones area. In the first book, Mystery at Witchend, the Morton children from Witchend (Priors Holt) and Tom Ingles from Ingles Farm (Hamperley Farm) form the Lone Pine Club and have a secret camp hidden under a solitary pine tree in the forest, they have many thrilling adventures in and around the local area.

So popular were the books, that they were serialised for Children’s Hour on the radio. Today, many people from around the world enjoy following in the footsteps of the Lone Pine Club, exploring the settings in the stories, of which Ingles Farm is one and you can explore the area from the farm that was included. Claire Balding with her Radio 4 Ramblings and Countryfile have featured Malcolm Saville, his stories and the local area linked to these over the years.
